Cristiano Ronaldo and ex-Arsenal star Robin van Persie included in Glazers’ best Manchester United signings XI as unpopular owners’ premiership potentially comes to end

The Glazer family’s tenure at Manchester United has seen a huge number of stars come and go.

But who are the best players they’ve signed in their premiership which could be about to come to an end?

Man United’s board released a statement on Tuesday evening confirming the unpopular American owners are ‘exploring strategic alternatives’.

Bankers and lawyers have been instructed to advise on the process, which could also result in a partial sale or a new partnership with third parties.

But it appears as though a full sale of the club is the most likely option, with the Glazers deciding after years of fan protests that now is the time to relinquish control.

Since taking over 17 years ago, the Red Devils’ owners have overseen five Premier League title wins in seven seasons between 2007 and 2013, including the Champions League in 2008 and the League Cup in 2010.

But following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, Man United have won just three honours – the FA Cup in 2016, and the League Cup and Europa League in 2017.

During their tenure, the Glazers have bought a number of stars. But who would make it into a Glazers best XI?

Starting in goal, Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea are the standout men between the sticks during the Glazers’ premiership.

Man United signed Van der Sar on June 10, 2005, when the Glazers were finalising their takeover of the club so we’ve gone for De Gea, who’s made the position his own since 2011.

Van der Sar won more titles, including four Premier Leagues, but De Gea has been a phenomenal servant to the club, winning a record four Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards.

It’s hard to argue against Nemanja Vidic, signed in January 2006, at centre-back after being there for seven and a half seasons where he had a brilliant partnership with Rio Ferdinand. He starts alongside Chris Smalling, who joined in 2010.

At right-back, Antonio Valencia earns his place. He gradually replaced Man United legend Gary Neville after signing from Wigan in 2009. He made a huge impact as a defender at United owing to his fast pace that he developed as his time as a winger.

Patrice Evra is on the other side of the back two. At the peak of his career around 2008, the Frenchman was widely considered the best player in his position in world football.

In midfield is Michael Carrick, who previously captained the Red Devils. And alongside him is Bruno Fernandes, who’s been at Man United since January 2020.

Meanwhile, versatile players Nani – who was brought in by the Glazers in 2007 – comes in on the left wing, with Juan Mata, who left the club last summer, on the right where he played earlier in his career.

Up top, it can only Robin van Persie – who signed from Arsenal for £24million in 2012 – and Cristiano Ronaldo, who was Man United’s top scorer last season on 24 goals.

Although Ronaldo – who had his contract terminated on Tuesday on the same day as the Glazers made their announcement – made his name at Old Trafford in his first spell as a winger, the Glazers resigned him as centre-forward last term, so he goes in the XI in that position.
