Portugal manager Fernando Santos ‘fed up’ as Bruno Fernandes gets peppered with Cristiano Ronaldo questions but Manchester United star says ‘nothing lasts forever’ after teammate’s Old Trafford exit on eve of World Cup opener

Portugal star Bruno Fernandes was forced to answer a barrage of questions about Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United on the eve of his nation’s World Cup opener.

Fernandes and co. face Ghana on Thursday night – live on talkSPORT – but build-up to their Qatar 2022 campaign has been dominated by events surrounding captain Ronaldo.

The Portuguese superstar has left United by mutual consent after making a number of astonishing claims about the club in a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan on TalkTV.

Ronaldo was expected to face the media on Wednesday, but instead it was his now-former Red Devils teammate Fernandes.

The media conference was dominated by questions about Ronaldo and Portugal manager Fernando Santos appeared increasingly frustrated.

At one point, Santos slumped back in his chair and journalist Adam Crafton suggested he looked ‘fed up’.

Fernandes said: “We are all focused 100 per cent on the national team and the World Cup. We are all aware of what we have to do.

“We are in a championship that is the dream of every player and a competition where every player wants to play.”

Asked if he would feel uncomfortable with his former Manchester United teammate, Fernandes added: “I don’t feel uncomfortable, I don’t have to pick a side.

“Cristiano has always been an inspiration for me so it was a dream come true to be able to play with him but we know nothing ever lasts forever.

“It was good while it lasted. We have to respect his decision, whether we agree or not.”

Meanwhile, Portugal boss Santos insisted the subject of Ronaldo’s move had not been raised among the group, adding: “This is something that has not been discussed when we have all been together.

“The conversation has not come up at any moment, not even from him (Ronaldo).”
