Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United predictions

It has been a long five and a half years for Manchester United.

A club that has long thought of itself as the biggest in the world has not won a trophy since 2017. There have been a few highs since then, but mainly lows – at least relative to expectations in the red half of Manchester.

Yet optimism has returned to Old Trafford this season. True, United dropped two points against Crystal Palace last week before losing to Arsenal on Sunday. But Erik ten Hag has already shown that his United team means business.

The Carabao Cup offers them the best chance of silverware. The tournament has opened up for United, who have beaten Aston Villa, Burnley and Charlton Athletic to make it this far.

Newcastle United will also fancy their chances of long-awaited glory, but the Red Devils are the only member of the big six still standing.

Patience will be the order of the day on Wednesday night. Ten Hag will implore his players to stay calm, knowing there is a second leg on home turf to come.

Nottingham Forest have improved considerably over the last three months, though, so this could be a close encounter under the lights at the City Ground.

Nottingham Forest vs Manchester United betting tips

A draw would not be a disastrous result for Manchester United in the first leg of this semi-final, and Nottingham Forest will push them hard in front of their own fans.

Both teams to score – 10/11 (bet365)

When these two teams met just over a month ago, Manchester United comprehensively outplayed Nottingham Forest.

Goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Fred earned Ten Hag’s men a 3-0 victory in a game in which their opponents hardly threatened at the other end.

But that fixture was at Old Trafford. Forest are a much tougher nut to crack at the City Ground. They have not lost any of their last eight matches in Nottingham, a stretch which includes visits from Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Steve Cooper’s side have also scored in each of those games. More than 81 percent of their Premier League goals this term have come on familiar territory.

Meanwhile, the only clean sheet United have kept in their last five outings in all competitions came against League One outfit Charlton.

Their backline was breached on three occasions by Arsenal at the weekend. The Gunners are the best team in the country right now and are particularly formidable at the Emirates Stadium.

But United’s confidence may nevertheless have taken a hit after a result which has left them 11 points adrift of top spot in the Premier League. A clean sheet could be beyond them here.

Draw at half-time – 5/4 (bet365)

The Carabao Cup’s format is unusual in that the semi-finals are the only stage of the tournament held over two legs. That undoubtedly influences how the two teams approach the tie.

Given their poor record on the road, Forest will feel they need to pick up a positive result at home to stand a chance of reaching the final.

As for United, the insurance policy of the second leg being at Old Trafford means they are unlikely to go all-out for victory here.

As such, the first half could be tight and cagey. For all that Forest realistically need to at least avoid defeat on Wednesday, they cannot afford to take too many risks in the first 45 minutes.

In a bid to utilise their speed on the counter-attack, Forest will allow United to dominate possession with a view to breaking forward quickly when the ball changes hands.

But Ten Hag will be content to see his side take the sting out of the home crowd in the opening stages, rather than contributing to a high-octane, end-to-end encounter.

Marcus Rashford to score any time – 15/8 (bet365)

Marcus Rashford was unlucky to end up on the losing side at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The England international opened the scoring with a brilliant goal in the first half, getting away from Thomas Partey and then firing a rasping shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Rashford was a constant threat on the counter-attack and Arsenal looked nervy whenever they had to deal with him.

United’s homegrown star is in the form of his life right now. After a difficult season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick last time out, Rashford is thriving as the main man in Ten Hag’s attack.

His nine appearances since the World Cup have yielded nine goals. Remarkably, he only failed to score in one of those games – the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace last Wednesday.

Wout Weghorst has had a decent start to his United career and the Dutch centre-forward should help to bring the best out of Rashford.

Weghorst occupies opposition centre-backs and is adept at bringing team-mates into play. Look out for him receiving the ball back to goal and then feeding it into the path of Rashford.

United’s No.10 is full of belief right now and the Forest defenders will have their hands full in trying to keep him quiet.
